This is information you don’t want to miss.

  • Brook Trout – their food sources are crustaceans, small insects and smaller fish.  You can locate them in waters with temperatures that are below 68 degrees.  If you are aiming to catch these kinds of trout then just go to areas where there are waterfalls and ponds with rocks coming out of the water.  Also look for trees, hanging overgrowth or anything else that can provide shade to the different areas of the lake or river. These environments are ideal for insects which in turn, attract brook trout.
  • Brown Trout – is probably one of the hardest to catch.  They are very cautious and not too receptive to bait.  The bigger they are, the more cunning they get.  They can withstand slightly warmer waters compared to brook trout.  They also prefer calm and quiet waters with hanging trees, logs, rocks or any other protective cover.  They like to hide so they prefer to feed at night when its dark.  They consume insects, crustaceans, worms and smaller fish.  The best way to catch these kinds of trout is by dry fly fishing.
  • Lake Trout – this type of trout resides in the deep and cold parts of the lake. They are also considered one of the biggest kinds of trout.  They eat any kind fish that lives in their area such as minnows, eels, smelt and the like.  You can use dry or wet flies to catch them during the springtime.  When the water on the surface of the lake becomes too warm during the hot summer months then these kinds of trout tend to move even deeper into the colder parts of the lake.  You can then use spoons or bait fish to effectively catch them when this happens.
  • Rainbow Trout – you can easily recognize them because of the pink streak that goes along their torpedo shaped bodies.  You can catch them by using flies, lures and live bait such as small insects, worms and minnows.  These trout thrive in streams until they reach a length of about 9 inches.  When they grow to this size, they migrate to the open oceans. They return to streams when it’s time to reproduce.   Anglers prefer this type of trout both for sport and for eating.

Trout fishing in MA can be fun and challenging.  I highly recommend that you keep the above notes jotted down somewhere on your fishing vest.
