Importance of Bait & Lure Scents

Importance of Bait & Lure ScentsSome people just seem to land those big fish year after year, fishing tournament after fishing tournament.

Years ago the advice of a most successful Mexican deep sea fisherman was that “to catch fish you have to think like a fish”.  Yet to many – especially middling anglers – they think of fish as animals of minimal intelligence, guile and cunning what so ever.

Yet it comes down to you – the advanced willing fisherman , simply being smarter than that animal and catching them in their own greed of the moment – that is when they snap onto your bait.  One area pros stress and yet novice occasional anglers don’t is fish scent.

Successful Fish Tournament Winners

Pay Attention to Bait & Lure Scent:

Yet successful anglers it seems do pay attention to scent and will go to the extent of actually soaking lures for a good time period in various potions which emit what they consider powerful fish biting scents and juices.

Slow Presentation to Fishing

Greatly Benefit from Odor Stimulus:

The importance of fish attracting scents themselves overall become even more a factor , and more pronounced when you use “slow presentations” to your valued prey.

Think of it, any time a fish gets a good long look at a lure, everything must be just right.  A well-chosen scent can more than just push a fish over the edge.  It can do a lot more – actually triggering a strike or attack on your bait or lure.

Some Specific Well Tested Fishing Scent Strategies:

Specific valued fish getting strategies include “the Erie drag”  which came into vogue over aSome Specific Well Tested Fishing Scent Strategies: decade ago and has since proved most effective in smallmouth bass fresh water fisheries.   Yet take note and remember that it’s not a slam dunk or a quick fix.

Fish have been observed since the dawn of man before making the decision, somehow, to strike or alternatively to turn away.

Hence scent plays a role in the equation and the right scent chosen for the time and locale can make the major difference of going home with a well filled fish stringer or an empty one.  If it’s a fish tournament this may be the tie breaker and winner for you.

Fish Catching Scents Come in a Variety of Forms & Types:

Lastly in picking scents and learning the tips of the masters remember that scents come in a variety of forms.  Some are infused into the baits themselves during their manufacturing process.  Others must be added, or added to by spraying or soaking the bait or lures themselves.

Another tactic is to soak organic bait – soak bait – minnows, worms, crickets etc in the scenting material itself thoroughly.  Then top up the hook of your lure with this pungent soaked material themselves.

Importance of Testing Trial & Error:

Lastly as with most contests in life and skills – and in this case it’s you pitted against that fish or school of fish – its trial and error.  Take the time and patience to try the full gamut of what you have in your fishing chest and toolkit.

What works in a bass lake may not work today. It may next weekend.  What does not pull it weight fresh water fishing may win you the grand prize in the fishing tournament at Puerto Morelos.

Sure everyone wants to land the mythical Blue Marlin – yet you an count on Barracuda year round , Sail Fish when in season – and usually snapper & grouper.  Of course lets not forget the dorado fish “Mai Mai”.   It seems though everyone in the Yucatan is waiting for the big annual Puerto Morelos fishing tournament.

Sport Fishing with Fish Finders

Sport Fishing with Fish FindersBe it for sport or for commerce, finding fish in an ocean or lake has changed forever since the introduction and development of modern fish finding technology.

The sport of fishing has been narrowed to an angler’s ability to attract fish to his line, rather than read the elements to locate a school of fish.

Fishing with a Nuclear Submarine?!?!?!

A fish finder employs the same technology as a billion dollar nuclear submarine. In a submarine, there is no way to view the surrounding area and manoeuver around an obstacle. It is for this reason, submariners ping their surroundings.

A ping is a sound burst that is released from the hydrophone of a submarine. The hydrophone releases a certain frequency and that frequency travels through water at a predetermined speed. This speed is governed by the density, temperature and salinity of water.

The sound burst then leaves the hydrophone. It travels in the water and if it encounters an object in its path, it will bounce an echo in the opposite direction. You guessed it; back to the submarine!

The time it takes for the echo to return is then calculated from the time of the original ping and the distance to the object that reflected the sound wave is measured. In a submarine, of course, the equipment that generates the pings and collects the echoes are extremely sensitive. Not only that but they search for ambient sounds in the ocean.

These include, whales singing, octopi propelling and even the sound of other submarines traversing the depths.

The Sounds You Cannot Hear….

The basis is that sounds travel very effectively in a liquid medium, even more so than in air. As such sound is a very useful tool to gauge depth and to ‘see’ in the dark. It is the same method bats use to see.

A bat is almost totally blind, but it is it’s sonar capability that allows it to navigate trees and buildings. In a fish finder, it is the exact same idea. The hydrophone emits a sound that then travels below the vessel. This sound is strong enough to reach shallow depths and at times; it doubles as a fathometer.

The guess work of finding schools of fish and relying in old wives’ tales and inaccurate sciences is a waste of time and resources. Plying the ocean blindly trawling for fish is neither necessary nor effective.

There are some who contend that the fish finder gives undue advantages to the fisherman and puts the fish at a disadvantage. If fishing were a sport, then anglers would have the freedom to find and harvest fish competitively. However, when fishing is a matter of survival, its best we enter the battle armed.

Trout bait set up method

Trout bait set up methodHere is a good trout bait set up that I found online and that I want to share with you!

This trout bait set up is known as a sliding sinker.

It is very effective for catching trout because it lets the trout catch the bait without feeling any of the weight, allowing them to trust the trap!

We all know how sensitive trout are and how easily they can spot our attempts to catch them. This is just another great tool in your arsenal.

Trout Bait Set Up Details

You are going to adjust the weight depending on the time of the year. In the summer time you are going to want to use a heavier weight 1/2oz and in the winter months you should use a lighter weight.

It is widely known that trout are closer to the shore during the winter months because the water is warmer there. Now you see why you need lighter weights in the winter.

It is essential that your get the length of the leader right.

sliding sinkerIn the summer it should be about four to five feet long, in the fall and spring it should be about 3 ft. long and it should be 2 feet long in the winter.

Again, the water conditions change so it is important that we get the bait to float around the area where the trout are swimming. I recommend that you ask park officials or the parks ranger what is the best length.

Use one-half of a worm/night-crawler and place it on a size sixteen bronze treble hook. You will want to use a worm blower to put air in the worm. Test it first to see if it floats in some water.

Alternative bait for your hook:

  • Place worm on two hooks and a marshmallow on the third hook.
  • Berkley Power bait and Sierra Gold bait are both good.
  • Salmon eggs.
  • Garlic and Velveeta cheese bait.
  • Use a plain old marshmallow.

Trout Fishing Advice Not To Forget!

The ranger is your friend! Don’t feel bad to ask him or her any questions you may have. They are a tremendous resource that you can freely use.

Ask them where is the best trout fishing spot in the area, what are the trout patterns for that area and ask them what strategies are working best for local anglers.

Don’t forget to obey the park’s rules and regulations. Stop catching trout once you have reached the permissible limit for the area that you are fishing in. Always ask the ranger if you are unsure about anything.

Please feel free to share your opinions and ideas about setting up bait in the comments section below.

Thank you and good luck with the trout.

Homemade Trout Bait Recipes That Work!

Homemade Trout Bait Recipes This post is all about homemade trout bait recipes.

We are going to teach you some trout bait recipes that you can make at home to help you catch those elusive freshwater hound dogs.

It is really important for me to provide you guys and gals with the best trout fishing information out there.

I am always asking for trout fishing information and bait advice from my angler buddies and I am also trolling around the websites looking for great advice and tips to help you on your fishing adventures.

I’m going to cover and explain some great homemade trout bait recipes that will give you the edge you need when fishing.

Homemade Trout Bait Recipes You Can Use

First, I’m going to share a trout dough bait recipe that I found online and that works wonders. If you need a good lure then just follow the recipes and advice here.

I know that a lot of anglers out there enjoy using sophisticated jigs and spinners but with these homemade bait recipes we will be taking more of a minimalist approach; because ‘simple’ is sometimes better.

So forget about shopping for your trout supplies. Today, it’s all about creating and making your own homemade trout bait. Let’s begin:

Homemade Garlic And Cheese Trout Bait Recipe

Ingredients:

You will need one cup of cornmeal, 2 cups of water, one cup of flour, a half a cup of sugar, 1/4 pound of Velveeta cheese and 1 tablespoon of powdered garlic.

1) Put the Velveeta cheese in a plastic tuba-ware like bowl that you can microwave in – Leave the cheese in the microwave until it melts completely.

2) Start mixing the melted cheese, the powdered garlic, the sugar, the flour and cornmeal in a big bowl until it’s thoroughly mixed. The end result should be a thick heavy dough.

3) Pour a large pot with water and heat it to a rapid boil.

4) Start separating the dough and shaping the dough into small balls.

5) Individually place the small balls into the boiling water and let it cook for about two minutes.

6) Dry off your homemade trout fishing bait on some paper towels. Now you got yourself a deadly and irresistible bait that will surely attract the trout in your area.

You are going to want to tie on a treble hook and place one trout dough ball bait on it. If you want to fish in deeper areas of the stream then I recommend casting this bait with a bobber for optimal results.

Homemade Trout Bait Recipe – Feed Them Dessert

This is the last of two homemade trout bait recipes that we have today. I hope you get some real good results with the last bait recipe that I got above.

If for whatever reason the trout aren’t biting then I’d like to recommend appealing to their sweet tooth.

I must warn you however, that this homemade bait might stink up your kitchen a bit. And you will also be using a color dye in this recipe in order to attract the trout.

Ingredients:

You’re going to use food coloring of your choice, 1/4 cup of clear corn syrup, cotton balls, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, 1/2 cup of cornmeal, one can of puréed sardines (3.75 ounces), 1/2 cup of flour, 1/4 cup Marshmallow Fluff and one cup of water.

1) Pour in the peanut butter, the food coloring, the water, and the corn syrup in a regular saucepan.

2) On medium heat you should bring the mixture to a low boil and you should stir the mixture once in a while then turn the heat down to ‘low’.

3) In a different bowl, mix the flour and cornmeal.

4) Take the bowl and slowly start dumping the cornmeal and the flour into the saucepan – All the while stirring until it’s all properly mixed together.

5) Mix the mixture at low heat until all the water has evaporated and the mixture is thick.

6) Remove the mixture from the stove and add in the marshmallow fluff and the sardines.

7) Once it has cooled, stir in the cotton balls – This will help the trout bait stick together.

Final Step: Form mixture into balls

Trout Bait Recipes The Homemade Way!

Like before, You are going to want to tie on a treble hook and place one trout dough ball bait. You will also want to cast this bait with a bobber if you want to fish in deeper areas of the stream.

I’m sure that these homemade trout bait recipes will help you bring in those elusive fish. Like always, I invite all of you to share your opinions and thoughts about these recipes in the comments section below.

Trout Fishing Frustration

Trout Fishing FrustrationThis post is dedicated to trout fishing frustration! We are not going to talk about brook trout fishing or trout fishing bait. Nothing of the sort, this post is meant to let off steam.

Has This Happened to You?

Whats wrong? I followed all the tips and pieces of advice that I could find. I read all the books available on trout fishing.

I learned from all the trout fishing experts and I watched them carefully.

But I keep catching nothing! I practiced and practiced yet nothing! I feel like blowing up the lake!

We have all been there…

I have experienced this exact situation many times. I know how it feels to come up empty handed after spending loads of time trying to get trout.

This post isn’t meant to tell you what you did wrong. This post is here to help you vent.

“Frustration creeps in little by little as time passes.”

There you are repeating an action or activity over and over again with no results. The more you try and fail the more frustrated you become.

Trout fishing got you down?

Now, I am not going to tell you about the finer points of ZEN trout fishing and how you should calm yourself.

My advice for you is to embrace what you feel because when you finally do catch the trout that you are looking for; then you can enjoy your victory even more.

Sometimes things don’t go your way ,even for the experts. I don’t care how good you are at whatever skill you can think of. There will be days that will get under your skin and there will be days where you are just pissed off.

I firmly believe that negative feeling such as frustration and anger are the dishes that success is served on.

Lets not forget that failure is a teacher and success breeds pride. We are born ready to win and succeed.

Failure ,on the other hand, is the lesson that we must learn. You can say that, failure is the evolution of victory that sharpens our skills and mind.

What do you all think? Please share your ideas and opinions about your own trout fishing frustration and how you handle it.

We would love to hear what you think are the best practices for handling negative emotions.

Take care and good luck with your trout fishing.

I would really appreciate some advice if you have time. I live in central Illinois and my only trout fishing experience was one 1 day of guided fly fishing in Colorado.

I am going to be going on a backpacking/fishing trip to Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in southern Montana from July 29th-August 3rd. I will be using an open faced reel with Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon Professional Grade 6lb. test line.

What are good methods of fishing for trout?

What are good methods of fishing for trout? In today’s post we will be covering the question: what are good methods of fishing for trout?

I know what you’re thinking, it’s an extremely broad and general question; and I want to tell you that you’re absolutely right.

I want to have some fun with this post and list two ideas I saw online and from my own noggin – concerning some interesting ways of fishing for trout.

Oh yeah, at the end of this blog post please feel free to add in your own experiences and opinions concerning your best methods.

You’re welcome to write in anything you’d like that concerns trout fishing but I would highly appreciate it if you share your own personal way on how to catch trout fish effectively.

Two good methods of fishing for trout

Tip 1 – Cast your spinner close to the sunken rocks and logs, as you know, that’s where trout love to hide and hang out.

Try to get your spinner to move like a minnow by that I mean I want you to mimic escape with your spinner so that the trout can give chase and eventually bite.

Tip 2Catch trout with corn if it’s allowed on the lake or in the park. You can use corn by sprinkling it on the surface of the water and hopefully drawing trout out that way.

All I got to say about the corn method is don’t knock it till you try it. :-)

There you have it, some good methods of fishing for trout that you can apply as soon as you get down to the lake or other trout fishing waterhole that you are familiar with.

Also, don’t be shy and add in your two cents about trout fishing, all information is welcomed and appreciated here.
